Best Value Hubsan Q4
The Hubsan Q4 is perhaps the best first drone at any age, sharing the same flight controls and dynamics as larger drones but with a price of only $20. The Q4 includes everything for beginners flight – a controller, a propellor guard, a spare set of propellors and the drone itself. Measuring only 45mm diagonal with a weight of only 11.5g, the Q4 can cause little harm to bystanders or objects and is capable of surviving repeated crashes by your kids.
Claimed to be the ‘Worlds Smallest Drone’, the Q4 uses a simple circuit board chassis with all components fully integrated. The Q4 has surprising speed, a 30m range and 5 minute flight time. The miniature Q4 is a great indoor drone and also performs well outdoors in light to moderate wind. The Q4 can easily be recharged quickly using a USB charger. Most tough UDI R/C 818A
This is a great camera drone for beginner to intermediate flyers, enclosed propellors protecting the drone from collisions with objects and the ground. In fact, the 818A has been described as a ‘Crash Resistant Camera Drone’ by reviewer Quadcopter 101. Headless Mode and a ‘Return-Home’ button help your kids and claw back of the drone during challenging conditions. Once confidence has quickly been built, your kids can then easily perform flips with the 818A.
The 818A camera drone features a 720P HD camera sensor with removable 4GB microSD card, generating great video footage thanks to stable flight. With two swappable battery packs included, you can make the most of the camera with up to 18 minutes flight time. Moreover, with a range closer to 100m than the stated 40m, you can survey a lot of territory. The only thing missing is FPV mode, but your kids might not mind. Check out this flight test of the 818A.
Best All Rounder Syma X5HW
The X5HW is an FPV drone, using WIFI to transmit footage from its onboard 2 megapixel camera camera to your mobile device. This is the first Syma to feature ‘Altitude-Hold’, which as the name suggests allows you to maintain altitude at a chosen level. This is particularly helpful for FPV flying, allowing your kids to focus more attention on avoiding objects. The X5HW also features ‘Headless-Mode’, helping both kids and adults maintain control of the camera drone in challenging conditions.
The X5HW is a stable camera drone with 5-7 minutes flight time, 30-50m range and weight below 250g, making this camera drone exempt from FAA registration. The X5HW is also perfectly capable of performing flips if your kids are feeling confident or brave. It is very hard to find a better drone for $54. See how the X5HW performs in this flight test by Quadcopter 101.
Best Compact FPV Hubsan H107D+
This featherweight camera drone packs lots of features. Firstly, the X4 H107D+ features FPV, but unlike similar drones, FPV footage and flight control are transmitted on different frequencies. The benefit of this is a much higher FPV range. The X4 H107D+ also features Altitude Hold, Headless Mode and a 2 megapixel 720P HD video camera.
The X4 H107D+ camera drone has a flight time of 7 minutes, automatically descending to a gentle landing at battery depletion. Control distance is between 50-100m, with FPV range slightly shorter at 30-60m depending on battery level. The X4 H107D+ camera drone’s compact size also means it is exempt from FAA registration. With the H107D+, Hubsan have shrunk the size without sacrificing features. This makes H107D+ the perfect camera drone for kids trying to reach the next level of drone flying. Check out the H107D+ in action below.
Most Capable Parrot Bebop
There’s almost nothing you can’t do with the Bebop, but this is also a very durable and easy to fly drone – perfect for kids. The Bebop is constructed from ABS plastic, which is heat-resistant, lightweight and impact-resistant (the same material as Legos and safety helmets). The ABS plastic is further reinforced with glass fibre to ensure maximum durability. The Bebop generates surprising performance from four brushless motors, giving a top speed of 30 mph in horizontal flight, which is sure to get your kids excited! The Bebop comes with a wide range of sensors to maintain great stability – a 3-axis accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, ultrasound sensor (8 meters range), barometer and vertical camera to track speed. A great feature of the Bebop is its built-in HD 14MP camera, recording in 1920 x 1080p resolution with 30 frames per second and 3800 x 3188 pixels for photos with a 180º lense that is dust and splash proof.
The Bebop is controlled using a tablet or smartphone using a special app (Free Flight 3). With this app you can control the Bebop quad, adjust camera angle, record video or take pictures, program auto-pilot flights, upload videos and photos instantly to Youtube and Facebook, among other features. While doing this you have First Person View of the image directly to your mobile device. No need to have your eyes on the quad when flying it, sit down, look to your screen, watch what your drone is watching and control it. It has 8GB of internal memory, so a lot of room for your kids video and photo files.
Thanks to a built-in GPS system there are even more fun features of the Bebop drone. Set a starting point to determine which altitude you want the Bebop to automatically fly to at the beginning of flight. The Return-to-Home function means you never have to worry about losing the Bebop – it can return to the point where it began flight with a single click. Watch the Bebop in action below.
