ImmersionRC Vortex Pro 250 Review | A high-performance FPV Racer for the Masses
The Vortex 250 Pro FPV Quad is a huge improvement to the former ImmersionRC model the Vortex 285. If you are an avid racer or an enthusiast looking to have your first go at FPV Drone Racing, this drone might be the one. Everything has been upgraded, motors, frame, flight controller, lighting system, On-board BlackBox, among many other details. A pure-bred racer. Very durable, it will withstand almost any crash, as quoting from the manufacturers official product page “The frame is designed to hit objects which don’t like to move out of the way, and survive to fly again in the next race”. On top of all the great improvements, the Vortex 250 Pro remains at a very affordable price. Let’s take a deeper look into this high-speed FPV racer drone features and specifications:
Vortex 250 Review: Motors
Forget the old 1806 motors, ImmersionRC has integrated the new, bigger and powerful Lumenier RX2204-14 2300kV racing motors. These brushless motors were designed to offer pilot top of the line high end performance and value for his drone. Thanks to high quality bearings and CNC precision machined parts, this motor provides silky smooth, reliable power. They have a strong 3mm internal shaft, therefore no longer needing set screws that tend to loosen over time. Motor saves weight by using a 5mm threaded prop adapter allowing pilot to directly mount the propeller to the motor without the need of a separate prop adapter. A lightweight flanged aluminium lock nut is also included with each motor ensuring propellers do not get loose during flights. RX2204-14 2300kV motor’s wire length is 100mm and includes pre-soldered male 2mm bullet connectors for easier installation. Motor dimension is 27x15mm, weight 23.3g each, and a have a max continuous power of 190W.
Vortex 250 Review: Flight Controller
A highly integrated state-of-the-art flight controller, gets an extensive update for the Vortex 250. F1 class processor has been updated to an F3, with two times more the performance, lower loop times, and better flight performance. Flash memory for BlackBox is also integrated, the buzzer was replaced for a louder one, and a port was added for direct serial receiver hookup (5V and 3.3v supply options). The Fusion Gen2 is pre-loaded with a custom build of CleanFlight, which allow for future updates.
Vortex 250 Review: Electronic Speed Control
ImmersionRC has also an improved drone ESCS. Custom 20A ESCs (22A Peak), with OneShot125, and regenerative braking, for sharp accurate responsive flights using CleanFlight custom build. A 32-bit ARM processor runs each ESC, providing a lot of power to drive the brushless motors. These ESCs also support rotorSENSE, which enable pilot to program prop direction. Allowing motor wires to be more durable.
Vortex 250 Review: ARM processors
This is one of ImmersionRC Vortex 250 Pro’s strongest factors. This drone has SEVEN 32-bit ARM processors, all working together at same time. One for the flight controller, the OSD, the LED board and the rest for the ESCs! What more can you ask?
Vortex 250 Review: Full Graphic On-Screen Display
An on-board full-graphic OSD displays in-flight updates of critical parameters of the flight data. Also features a menu which allows all options to be programmed in the field using the R/C Tx, and a set of FPV goggles, or an LCD monitor.
Vortex 250 Review: Frame
A very resistant frame which won’t break even hitting full speed at a wall. The Vortex 250 Pro design was built to endure the most aggressive of crashes. Which FPV racer does not aim for this? Unbreakable 4mm Carbon Fiber flat arms, with twelve M3 aluminium spacers. The 2mm Carbon Fiber top-plate is highly durable, backed up by 2mm FR4 skid plates. There is nothing which break this amazing racer.
Vortex 250 Review: Camera and Flight Camera
The Vortex 250 Pro comes with everybody’s favourite GoPro Hero 3 / 4 and corresponding flexible mount. But it is also compatible with other action cameras currently in the market. As expected the package includes a FatShark 700TVL version 2 CMOS for FPV flight through use of goggles.
